Design & Technology

Design and Technology

DT is planned using Kapow and PPA Cover bespoke curriculum . Cooking is done cross curricular where possible and is included in our theme weeks such as Healthy Lifestyles week.

The purpose of Technology is for all pupils to be given the opportunity to be confident when using a wide range of tools/equipment and develop their practical knowledge and skills and understanding of how to use equipment/tools safely and effectively.

Design and technology is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject. In our school we believe in developing an inclusive curriculum that gives every child the opportunity to develop their imagination and put their practical skills to good use.

Using creativity and imagination, pupils design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values.

Aims

The key aim for DT delivered at St.Clement’s is to promote high standards of Designing and Making, enabling pupils to reach their full potential whilst at the Academy equipping them for later life. This aim can be broken down further into 4 smaller objectives:

1. To provide the pupils with stimulating challenges which will lead to inner satisfaction and confidence when a task has been accomplished.

2. To provide a wide range of practical experiences and develop appropriate practical skills.

3. To increase the pupils’ understanding of aesthetics by encouraging them to discern between good and bad design.

4. To provide all pupils with the best possible technological education up to the age of sixteen and to encourage future interest in this area.

5. To encourage lively and inquiring minds with the ability to identify and solve problems both individually and in groups.

The national curriculum for design and technology aims to ensure that all pupils:

·       develop the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world.

·       build and apply a repertoire of knowledge, understanding and skills in order to design and make high-quality prototypes and products for a wide range of users.

·       critique, evaluate and test their ideas and products and the work of others

·       understand and apply the principles of nutrition and learn how to cook.
