Welcome to Year 5!

 

We are looking forward to seeing you in September and can’t wait to start our new exciting learning.

 

Your class teachers will be Mrs Price and Mrs Austin - Smith.

 

In year 5, each day will start with a morning task, or reading, to get your brains warmed up while we take turns to wash our hands and prepare for the day ahead.

 

One of the teachers will always be there to welcome you in so remember to say good morning and share a smile.

 

This will be our class reader for the first half term and we will read this together. Perhaps you could read one of these Ancient Egyptian stories over the summer?

 

In English, we will be learning to:

  • Use a wide range of conjunctions, adverbs and prepositions
  • Write narratives with settings, characters and plot
  • Use direct speech punctuation
  • Use paragraphs
  • Use apostrophes for plural possession
  • Improve spelling and handwriting
  • Use simple organizational devices

 

In maths, we will be learning to:

  • Count backwards through zero to include negative numbers
  • Interpret negative numbers in context
  • Count forwards and backwards with negative numbers
  • Count in multiples of 6,7,9,25 and 1000
  • Order and compare numbers beyond 1000
  • Round decimals with one decimal place to the nearest whole number
  • Solve number and practical problems

 

In topic, we will be studying the Ancient Egyptians. We will learn to:

  • Know and sequence key events
  • Make comparisons between different times in the past.
  • Use a variety of questions and internet for research
  • Learning about key individuals such as Tutankhamun, Howard Carter and pharaohs.
  • Learn all about mummification.

 

In science, we will be learning all about Forces and to:

  • Plan different types of scientific enquiries to answer questions.
  • Record results using scientific diagrams and labels
  • Use test results to make predictions
  • Report and present findings from enquiries
  • Research key facts about Isaac Newton and forces
  • What gravity is and the third law of motion
  • How air resistance works

 

You will have homework each week, including a reading book, maths and spellings.

 

Don’t forget to bring your book bag every day and change your reading book every week.

 

You will also need the correct P.E. kit twice a week for P.E. We will have PE on Tuesday and Wednesday.
